> background

Founded on the teachings of
Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a
holistic approach to conditioning
that optimizes musculoskeletal
increases flexibility and develops
lean muscle tone, without risking
injury or adding bulk.

Pilates places intense concentration
on the deepest muscles of the
abdomen.  Whether recovering from an injury or a conditioned athlete, Pilates aim of
building strength, flexibility, and endurance remains the same.  Emphasis is placed on
core stability, including pelvic and shoulder girdle stabilization, neutral alignment and
patterned breathing.  By learning to properly use your body's core, neck and back
pain can be greatly reduced, if not completely eliminated.  Pilates results in a better
aligned body that feels revitalized and moves with ease.

    CONTROL
Control is at the core of Pilates.  Each movement serves a function and unlike
some exercise methods, Pilates extreme attention to detail avoids injury that
can take place from sloppy, haphazard movements.

    STABILIZATION
Pilates helps to find the deep stabilizing muscles and retrains them to support
the neck, back, and shoulders.  Learning to use our stabilizing muscles allow us
    greater strength and agility.

    THE MIND/BODY CONNECTION
The Pilates philosophy trains the mind and body to work together to achieve
overall fitness.  By focusing the mind, maximum benefits can be achieved.

    INCREASED STRENGTH & FLEXIBILITY
Strength and flexibility go hand in hand in Pilates.  The precise and fluid
movements of Pilates are designed to lengthen and strengthen muscles while
conditioning the body as a whole.

BUILD CORE STRENGTH WHILE ALLEVIATING PAIN
The powerhouse is the girdle of strength from which all Pilates exercises
originate.  By learning to properly recruit the abdominal muscles when
exercising or lifting heavy loads, one can greatly alleviate neck and back pain.

    IMPROVE POSTURE/BALANCE/COORDINATION
Much of our fatigue is a result of poor posture and imbalances in the body.
Pilates works to align and stabilize the body so everyday movements are
    performed with ease and strength.

    MIND BODY-AWARENESS
Through visualization, Pilates works to balance the mind, body and spirit.  By
creating a habit of relaxed effort, our body will follow the mind's lead in living our
    abundant lives.
